In January 2010, Malaysian Association of Company Secretaries (“MACS”) breaks new ground in with their professional qualification in Sabah, East Malaysia, by extending the qualifications directly to the residents of Sabah, East Malaysia. The Association signed a Memorandum of Understanding for Fast Track Programme with Pine Academy Group Sdn. Bhd. (“PAG”).
This Programme allows the students of PAG to complete the Professional Examination of MACS with up to exemptions on ten (10) examination papers. The tuition of the subjects in the Examination will be conducted by PAG and the first intake of students is expected to be in March 2010.
The students who have completed MACS Professional Examination could apply to become full Members of the Association once they have attained three (3) years of relevant company secretarial working experience. As MACS is a prescribed body under Section 139A(a) of the Companies Act 1965, members of the Association (Fellow and Member grades only) could practice as Certified Company Secretaries without the need of obtaining the license from the Companies Commission of Malaysia.
For graduates with a degree in accounting or major in accounting accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (“MQA”), or from an accredited overseas universities approved/recognized by the MQA, they are only required to sit for two (2) papers in the Professional Stage of MACS Examination out of sixteen (16) papers, namely Company Secretarial Practice and Malaysian Company and Securities Law. In order to be entitled to the fourteen (14) papers exemptions, the applicants must apply to register as students of MACS by 30 June 2010.
Prof. Fred Chin, Managing Director of Pine Academy Group who is instrumental to making the signing of the MOU possible said: “I am happy that MACS professional qualification is more easily available in Sabah to inject new blood into the profession of corporate secretaries locally. The Fast Track Programme will be launched in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah in March 2010 and will soon be extended to other major towns in Sabah.”
The MOU was signed by Mr. Lau Haw Chong (President of MACS) and Ms. Elaine Kong (Director of Professional Development of PAG), witnessed by YB Melanie Chia (Member of State Legislative Assembly of Luyang, Sabah).
In attendance from Kuala Lumpur were the Deputy President of MACS, Tn. Haji Osman bin Ujang, MACS Administrator, Mr. Alex Lee, Managing Director of PAG, Prof. Fred Chin and representing Institute Prima Bestari was its Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Chung Fook Phing, who is also a member of MACS.
